Heidelberg Engineering brings OCT LIVE to Optrafair
OCT LIVE with Chris ModyHemel Hempstead, UK – Heidelberg Engineering is bringing their popular OCT LIVE format to Optrafair for the first time on the 1st, 2nd and 3rd April. The CET accredited sessions will take place on the Heidelberg Engineering stand, G20, and feature three patients who will be scanned live on the big screen by the SPECTRALIS Imaging Platform.
Three different OCT LIVE themes will be running throughout the weekend which will focus on either retinal disease, glaucoma or “a day in the life of a Birmingham optometrist” with Peter Waite from K.G. Miles Optometrists.
“Participants will be guided through the patient journey, from how multimodal imaging can be used to assess eye disease to interpreting the images and making a decision on patient management” explains Christopher Mody, Director of Clinical Services. “The “live” format adds a more realistic and interesting dimension to the session in comparison to printed case studies”.
All sessions are CET accredited with 3 peer discussion points and participant numbers will be capped at no more than 15 people. Register early to avoid disappointment at this link: www.optrafair.co.uk/education/on-stand-cet
First private ophthalmology practice in the UK takes delivery of OCT Angiography Module for SPECTRALIS
Hemel Hempstead, UK – In January, The Windsor Eye Clinic, Berkshire, became the first private ophthalmology practice in the UK to take delivery of the OCT Angiography Module for SPECTRALIS.
“Having evaluated a number of platforms on the market I decided on the Heidelberg SPECTRALIS because of the outstanding image quality, the modularity of the system, the upgradeability and the long term support” explains Sundeep Kheterpal, Consultant Ophthalmic Surgeon and Director at Windsor Eye Clinic.
“We have always tried to offer patients who are referred to us the highest quality diagnostic imaging. This enables us to provide the patients and referrers with the maximum amount of information in order for the best informed choices to be made regarding treatment or monitoring.
It was also important for us to work with a company who would be able to provide us with both the technical and clinical support into the long term as well as education for our team both locally, nationally and internationally. We see large numbers of patients with retinal and macular disease and, having watched the development of OCT angiography technology, felt that now was the time to be able to offer this to our patients. SPECTRALIS allows us to make more informed choices regarding treatments and provides more accurate monitoring. With the new OCT Angiography Module, we hope to be able to avoid a significant proportion of patients having to undergo invasive fluorescein angiography.
The ultra-high resolution OCT2 scanning facility for SPECTRALIS combined with the enhanced depth and diagnostics of the OCT Angiography Module enables us to add and build upon information provided to us from local optometrists, many of whom may be already referring patients with OCT scans done in the community.
We are already seeing detail that we have never seen before on our ultra-high resolution OCT2 scans and the OCT Angiography Module is already helping us to alter and modify treatment paradigms. Patients appreciate our investment in the latest technology and we are proud to offer the capability to patients in the local area”.

Heidelberg Engineering delivers OCT LIVE in front of biggest audience yet
Macular oedema secondary to branch retinal vein occlusion with epiretinal membrane (image A). Diabetic retinopathy with secondary maculopathy (image B). Post-treatment wet AMD with RPE atrophy and sub-retinal fibrosis (image C).Hemel Hempstead, UK – Heidelberg Engineering delivered their biggest OCT LIVE session yet to an audience of 150 at the annual Eyecare conference in Glasgow on Monday 23rd January.
Local Consultant Ophthalmologist Manish Gupta, from Glasgow Royal Infirmary, arranged for three of his patients to be scanned live in HD on the main stage using the SPECTRALIS Multi-modal Imaging Platform. He gave delegates an insight into the patients’ cases, as well as advice on referral pathways. The patient volunteers exhibited macular oedema secondary to branch retinal vein occlusion with epiretinal membrane (image A), diabetic retinopathy with secondary maculopathy (image B) and post-treatment wet AMD with RPE atrophy and sub-retinal fibrosis (image C).
Comments left on the feedback forms for the session were excellent and included: “It was a brilliant format – I loved it! I don’t have an OCT, so these lectures are normally above me, but this was really informative and there were some great tips from Dr Gupta” and “What an excellent idea. It was great to have real patients to discuss. I’d like to see more lectures like this please!”
Each OCT LIVE event is worth 3 CET points to both optometrists and dispensing opticians and is designed to build the eye care professional’s confidence in OCT image interpretation and patient management. You can find an event near you at www.he-academy.com/octlive
OIA imaging trophy for best OCT won by Edinburgh photographer using SPECTRALIS
The winning image showing bilateral adult vitelliform macular dystrophy in a 19 year old patient.Hemel Hempstead, UK – The coveted Ophthalmic Imaging Association award for best ocular coherence tomography of 2016 has been awarded to Mark Hope, Medical Photographer from The Princess Alexandra Eye Pavilion. His winning OCT image was captured using the SPECTRALIS Imaging Platform and shows a 19 year old female patient who has bilateral adult vitelliform macular dystrophy.
“I submitted this particular image because I feel it is an example of a high quality OCT; it shows good technique and highlights the pathology well. I took advantage of the enhanced depth imaging mode to provide good detail through both the retina and choroid” explains Mark. “I have used a few different OCT machines and I feel the SPECTRALIS offers the best results. In my opinion as a photographer, it is very versatile and allows me to capture high quality images of patients.”
Entrants for the annual award were judged on the degree of photographic skill necessary to obtain the image as well as the overall image quality and complexity.
